Dior Sunglasses – 1980's Vintage Luxury and Timeless Style
My 1980s Christian Dior sunglasses, made in Austria and bought on Vestiaire Collective: a small silver metal frame, and why I chose it over a new pair.
These are my Christian Dior sunglasses from the 1980s. A silver metal frame, tinted lenses, the CD on the arm. I bought them on Vestiaire Collective.
The 1980s was not a decade for playing it safe, and neither are these.
Crafted in Austria
They were made in Austria, and it is stamped on the frame. After all these years the stamp is still crisp. That is the first thing I look for, and in the video I show you where to find it.
The frame is silver metal. For me nothing feels like it. It is cold when you pick it up, it has some weight, and it is fine without being fragile. Most of what I am shown new is plastic. I would choose this every time.
The boldness of the 1980s
The 1980s was the decade of big everything, sunglasses included. These are not that. The frame is small.
But everything about fashion then said look at me, and these still do. Fashion has gone quieter since. When I put them on I get a bit of that nerve back.
The frame looks delicate, and it has lasted for decades. You feel why the moment you hold it.
The lenses
The lenses are tinted in a brown-grey that fades towards the bottom. Hiding behind them is half the fun.
And I do wonder who wore them before me. Where did she take them? Every vintage piece comes with a little of that mystery, and it is half the reason I buy them.
Wearing them now
For outfits I take my inspiration from television, from series like Miami Vice. These are from the same years, so they belong there: pale linen, a jacket with the sleeves pushed up, and the sunglasses doing the talking.
They are the opposite of buy it, wear it, throw it away. They have lasted this long and they will be in my wardrobe for years yet.
