Change Your Sole – The Bold Move to Bright Colours in Shoe Repair

When my Miu Miu heels needed new soles I chose bright red over brown leather. How to find a good shoe repairer and ask for a coloured sole.

When my Miu Miu heels started to show their wear, I had a decision to make. I had bought them brand new at the antique market in Lucca, for €80. The old sole was brown leather, and the usual choice is to put the same back. I went for bright red, the red everybody knows from Christian Louboutin. Why blend in when you can stand out?

A repair is a chance to make a shoe yours

Shoe repair is usually seen as a chore. For me it is a chance to personalise. A shoe is only a shoe until someone steps into it. So why put back a drab sole when you could have a splash of colour? It could be a dazzling red. It could be an electric blue.

In the video I talk about how to pick the right shoe repair.

Why a bright colour?

With their red soles, my Miu Miu heels have become a statement piece. Bright colours give me joy and confidence, and they lift a plain outfit. Think of a crisp white dress with red soles underneath.

Finding the right shoe repairer

Find a skilled cobbler, and don’t settle for just anyone. You want someone who knows the craft and can do exactly what you ask. Then be clear about it. Say which colour you want and how bright. If you want the boldest red there is, say so.

If you are nervous, start small

You may feel a twinge of anxiety. What if the colour is too bold? What if it clashes with everything in your wardrobe? Here is the thing: life is too short for boring shoes. If you are unsure, start with a pair of sandals or flats. Once you see how good it looks, you will want to do the rest.

People notice

Coloured soles start conversations. People see them and ask where you found the shoes. Then you get to tell them that the shoes are old and the soles are the work of a good cobbler.

So if you have a pair sitting at the back of the wardrobe waiting for a second chance, don’t throw them out. Change the sole.
