Gucci Vintage – History, Craftsmanship And Elegance
Why I choose vintage Gucci scarves and shoes over new ones: the silk, the leather, my Tom Ford-era heels from Lucca, and advice on starting a collection.
I have always loved luxury, but vintage Gucci is something else. For me, a scarf or a pair of shoes from the old days of the house is a way into its history and into the way things used to be made.
A Gucci scarf does more than keep you warm or finish an outfit. The bold patterns, the fine detail and the depth of colour make it a statement, and one that has outlasted a lot of trends.

When I pick up a vintage Gucci scarf, the first thing I notice is the silk. To me it feels different. Richer. It was designed for a time that valued patience and quality, and this is not fast fashion.
The scarf in these photographs is mine, and I found it at a market. It has a deep red border and a basket of red and white wildflowers on cream silk, with the Gucci signature beside the flowers.

Then there are the shoes. My Tom Ford-era Gucci high heels came from the vintage market in Lucca. I am wearing them in the second photograph here. On the vintage pairs I own the leather is supple and it has aged well. Modern Gucci shoes are lovely, don’t get me wrong. But to me the old pairs have a character the new ones lack. They were built to last, and they do.
I also have a pair of vintage Gucci loafers that have been with me through thick and thin: weekends in Florence, the antique markets of Paris, the streets of Rome.
The black flat beside the Gucci shoe box is not mine, and neither are the two canvas bags in these photographs. They were on the stall at the Lucca market where I bought my heels, and I was trying things on.
Why do I choose vintage over new Gucci? It is simple. For me the vintage pieces show a level of craftsmanship I don’t find in the new ones. In 2021 I bought a new pair of Gucci sunglasses. The glitter came off after a few wears, and so did the stamp. Modern Gucci is fun. But what made the house famous is in its old pieces.
Is it an investment?
People talk about vintage Gucci as an investment. I can’t promise you what any piece will be worth. What I can say is that a scarf or a pair of shoes that has already lasted for decades was made well, and it starts conversations too. And I like to know I got a good bargain.
In a world of disposable fashion, these pieces have been loved and looked after by the women who owned them before me. I like knowing that.
That link to a world before fast fashion is what keeps me coming back to vintage.
If you are thinking of starting your own collection, choose carefully. Look for pieces that speak to you and suit your own style. Don’t be swayed by trends. Vintage Gucci is about wearing something that not everyone else has. That is the real luxury: something rare, something beautiful, and yours.
